Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Bilyana Dimitrova immigrated to the US with her parents as a young child. She grew up in New York City and was first introduced to Fine Art Photography while studying Art at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Music, Art and the Performing Arts. She decided to pursue photography and began to study under the guidance of renowned photographers Stephen Shore and Larry Fink at Bard College, NY. While at Bard College, she began to develop her interest in documenting how people personalize their living environments. This interest led to her first book To Each His Home.
Bilyana Dimitrova was introduced to the field of Architectural Photography when she made the acquaintance of Peter Aaron, of Esto Photographics, Inc. Peter Aaron's photographs of residential interiors served as a model for how her Fine Art Photography could function in a commercial context. To better prepare herself for a career in Architectural Photography, Bilyana Dimitrova began to seek out the most accomplished photographers in the field. She started working as a photography assistant for Peter Aaron, David Sundberg and Jeff Goldberg, of Esto Photographics, Inc, as well as for Scott Frances, Michael Moran and Paul Warchol.
Bilyana Dimitrova has been photographing architecture since 2000 and held the post of photo editor at Metropolis magazine from 2006-2008. She currently works as a photographer full-time and receives commissions from a variety of clients, such as: architects, interior designers, publications and ad agencies. She has had the pleasure to photograph projects by Cook+Fox, Frank Gehry, Gensler(NY), Karim Rashid, Rafael Viñoly, Steven Holl, Studios Architecture, Tsao+McKown, Weiss/Manfredi and many others.
Bilyana Dimitrova has been a guest lecturer at Kansas State University, The New School and Savannah College of Art and Design (Lacoste, France and Savannah campuses).
